I adore this. 10000 percent agree. This year, I started a collection of vintage dog figurines. The little porcelain ones that seem to show up in every thrift and antique store. Stumbling upon them at random has been a joy. I was inspired by a friend of a friend's grandmother, who had such a large collection of Buddha statues that they were given away to every attendee at her funeral. I was so charmed by this, even if the notion of a white woman collecting Buddha statues is problematic at best. Just the idea of having a store of little trinkets so large they can be used as favors at my funeral delighted me!
as someone who works with little kids, I can tell sometimes when they own labubus as a sort of status symbol and have no care for what they have, just that they have it and to prove something. beautiful piece, i loved reading it
"a true collection is built over time, it should grow as you grow yourself, and just because you can immediately buy an excess of something does not mean you should." thank you
"if you own more than one, i better see those little freaks dangling off your bag in 20 years" had me laughinggg out loud for real. obsessed with every word of this!!!!!!
I was having a conversation with my friend about this the other day, how the labubu trend really grates on me and she asked me ‘how is it any different to you and your jellycats?’ Which, honestly did stop me in my tracks for a bit — I wanted to articulate that I’ve always been into them (which honestly, I have, a local garden centre used to sell them when they were those little dangly guys on a piece of cord and I LOVED those little guys — I remember them being a lot less soft then too, almost suede-y. Now, I reserve purchasing them for special occasions, like a new job or an exceptionally bad day, birthdays or Christmas) but that still didn’t feel like an adequate response. I guess what I was wanting to get at is what you’ve put so eloquently here, is that when something you collect is driven by trend and fleeting impulse it ceases to be a collectable, it’s a quick consumer fix. With Labubus, they’ve just exploding into the mainstream from being relatively low key (at least in the UK that’s how it feels) Maybe longevity is key here? when a collection is something that grows with you I think that’s where it gains special meaning, it’s imbued with something more than virality. Maybe this is just an excuse for the chokehold those little bashful bunnies have over me lol
I was picturing a much more discreet Snoopy. Wow, massive. Clean. And secured by what looks like a hoop earring. I want to heart that photo.
beautifully said
this reminds me of a book called "Happy Victims" by Kyoichi Tsuzuki and I think you'd enjoy it!
thank you!
