the sandy liang x salomon collab, a cherub thigh tattoo, and lizzie mcguire's embellished jeans.... + an argument for not being too cool to care
+.。☆゚:;。+゚ ☆* 10 things i haven't stopped thinking about this week... +.。☆゚:;。+゚ ☆*゚
haley nahman recently published a “maybe baby” essay i fell in love with where she discusses whether or not we should “care” about our jobs. in the piece she argues that our recent societal shift away from girlboss culture has overcorrected itself into a pressure to not care about our jobs at all. in opposition to this ideology she gives an analogy of going to a basketball game where initially she was extremely bored, but then she challenged herself to pay attention and become invested in the players and their dynamics. by the end of the game she felt comradery and excitement that completely transformed her experience within 30 minutes.
this anecdote struck a cord with me in particular because this is the very same theory that has led me to be in such a healthier mental place. i strongly stand behind the notion that i am “not too cool to care” meaning i care a lot about… basically everything. i care about a friend of a friend of a friend’s instagram photo dump, i care about my favorite hummus brand coming out with a new flavor, i care about the cherry blossoms finally blooming in tompkins square park, i care about my best friend’s newest tattoo, i care when i have a big accomplishment at work and i care that you are reading this substack!! inherently i am a earnest person at my core which i’ve learned fights against the ethereal illusiveness that comes with being perceived as “cool” (especially in new york). however, whenever i have been in a particularly low mental place it’s because i don’t care about whatever i am doing.
i’ve had a few conversations recently with younger girls in college and when they ask me my advice for ~post-grad life~ my biggest takeaway is to learn to care about everything. take time to curate a silly playlist for an extremely niche situation, create a group chat with the sole purpose is to analyze the dynamics on vanderpump rules (lmk if you want to talk about the scandoval..), take time to notice when you see a little kid on the subway holding onto their parents with a special type of intimacy that only exists when you are 7 years old. it’s cool to care about these things! the fear of being perceived as “giving a shit” could be holding you back and i promise your life will be so much richer.
here are 10 things i cared a lot about this week !
the sandy liang x salomon collab is basically the personification of everything i could have asked for in a collab. i love it and will not rest until i get my hands on a pair
2. if you are my close friend you most likely have to endure my weekly “so i think i am going to get X tattoo” text. this week i have been FIXATED on emma corrin’s cherub thigh tattoo. i’ve wanted a cherub tattoo for a while but have never been able to land on a placement, this ~may~ be it
these jeans from free people that remind of the episode of lizzie mcguire where she goes to the mall to be “the jeans” in order to be voted best dressed at school- naturally as you can imagine this episode had a profound impact on 8 year old me
4. (very late to this..) but i recently subscribed to the “are u coming?” newsletter by brock colyar for the cut. i have always been in love with nightlife culture, i took a class in london that basically spent the entire semester studying party/rave subcultures and it was one of the most beautifully enriching classes i have ever taken. this newsletter feels like an extension of that class to me and is a love letter to both new york and the joy of partying
i do not need another sweatshirt!!!!!!! but i love the prayingg princess diana purple beanie baby crewneck- comes to a surprise to no one that i am a big princess di head
i devastated that i missed the opportunity to buy this little vintage cherub trinket dish from recurate and will think about it forever and ever and ever
obsessed with this inexplicable rotting engraved chanel watermelon in the street during a violet thunderstorm in williamsburg. the things she must have seen before she was discarded…..
was absolutely charmed by the curated selection of books dedicated to female friendship at mcnally jackson <3
9. one of my favorite episodes of sex and the city is “a woman’s right to shoes” and i was purely giddy to see that the every outfit podcast recapped the episode this week
10. about to finish tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by gabrielle zevin and i DON’T WANT IT TO END !!! (thank u j for the rec)
XOXOXO
